Sword Fighting Class – Do We Know what is Right and Just and Fair?

It is very encouraging to me to know that there are several of you who are memorizing Proverbs 2 with me.  And I know you’re feeling it – God’s wisdom seeping in as he writes his words on our hearts and minds.  Thank you, Father!Proverbs 2 1st page - this one

“My Child, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and you will find the knowledge of God.

For the Lord gives wisdom, from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.  He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless.  He guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.

Great job!  Listen closely to this next verse:

Then you will understand what is right and just and fair – every good path.

EVERY GOOD PATH!

Who would like to know every good path?

God says we will understand every good path when we search for his wisdom like hidden treasure, call out for insight and apply our hearts to understanding.

We will know.

Thank you, Abba Father.

Sword Fighting Class – We are Protected

Listen to God’s promises in the verses we have memorized so far in Proverbs 2:

‘My child, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and you will find the knowledge of God.  For the Lord gives wisdom, from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.  He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless’.Proverbs 2 1st page - this one

Wow!  The fear of the Lord, the knowledge of God, wisdom, understand, victory and a shield!

Here’s our next verse:

‘He guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.’

God’s grace makes us the ‘just’ in his eyes – amazing, isn’t it?  He promises to guard our course.

And if only one thing can be said about me after my dust has been blown off of this planet, I want to be remembered as being faithful to God.

Devoted.   Loyal.  Reliable.  Consistent.  All of these words show up in the definition of being faithful.

He protects our way when we are faithful to him.

It is promises like these that give me peace.  God’s peace.  He is in control.  I just need to do my part of obeying and seeking and looking and search and committing his words to my heart and turning my ear to his wisdom.

Then he can do his part of guiding and teaching and guarding.

Thank you, Abba Father.

Sword Fighting Class – Victory is Ours

We are having a great journey through Proverbs 2 as we memorize it together.  The journey is slow when we’re memorizing – each word is gradually etched upon our minds and our hearts.  Eventually, the first couple of verses get relatively easy because we’ve said them so many times.  And then the next couple of verses get easier as we say them over and over.

And then, suddenly, we are memorizing verse 7!  Yeah!  And we know it’s not about how good we are at memorizing anything.  If this was just us, we wouldn’t be working on verse 7 or 8 or 9.  We wouldn’t have gotten this far.

God is doing this.  He is rewarding our faithfulness of going through our memory cards  every day several times a day or writing these verses out several times a day.  As we are consistent and faithful, he is writing them on our hearts.

And we find the hidden treasure.  As we memorize, we ponder the words.  We meditate on the message.  We absorb the truth.  And God changes our hearts.  He renews our minds.

If you haven’t gotten on this memorizing journey yet with us, you can still catch up.  We’ve been adding one verse a week.  I don’t post these Sword Fighting Class blogs on Facebook so, you can sign up for an email (on the right of my blog page) if you want to receive this weekly email..Proverbs 2 1st page - this one

A group of my friends are memorizing Proverbs 2 with me and its such a great encouragement to me to hear these words coming from all kinds of people around me.  Several of them are ahead of where we are here – this can get kind of addicting because it feels so right and good.  Who doesn’t need more wisdom?

Proverbs 2:  “My child, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and you will find the knowledge of God.  For the Lord gives wisdom, from his mouth come knowledge and understanding”

And we add the next verse:

“He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless.”

I love the thought of God holding a shield over my life.  I’m not blameless but he sees me as blameless because I’ve accepted his gift of grace which Jesus made possible through his sacrifice on the cross for me.

And I want victory in my life.

Victory over the things that weigh me down.  The things that hold me back.  Any ‘smallness’ in my character.  Any  habits or behaviors that don’t bring honor to God.

Victory has been one of the driving factors to me in my quest to eat well and exercise this last year.  After a lifetime of struggling with old habits in this area, I want victory.  As I’ve been calling out for insight into living a more healthy life and I’ve been looking for wisdom about food like it was silver, God has been giving me victory in using food as a source of nutrition, not as a source of comfort or reward.   God has opened my eyes to his numerous commands regarding food and how I need to treat my body like a temple of his Holy Spirit.  He has opened my heart to my need to obey in this part of my life.  And he is giving my victory!

God holds victory in store for the upright- to those who are doing the right things….who obey.

Thank you, Abba Father.

Sword Fighting Class – Where Do We Get Wisdom?

“My child, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and you will find the knowledge of God.”Proverbs 2 1st page - this one

Awesome!   It’s it amazing how God partners with us as memorize his word?  The vast majority of us could never do this on our own so it’s a special blessing to be able to see this how obviously God is working in our minds as he helps us memorize verse after verse….after verse.  I have started attaching an audio recording (below) of me as I repeat my verses – it’s not perfect.  But it’s close!  That’s what counts 🙂

And we hit treasure in our next verse!

‘For the Lord gives wisdom, from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.’

Do we want wisdom?

Knowledge?

Understanding?

Well, we know where to go to get it.  The Lord gives it.  It comes from him.

Do you feel his wisdom and understanding growing in you as you etch his words on your heart and mind?

I do.  It’s subtle…..but steady.

I meditate on the words as I memorize them.  And I apply them to my life right now.

I’m amazed at how often I get to use them in my conversations.

God is good!  All the time!

Thank you, Abba Father.

Sword Fighting Class – Knowing God

My child, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,Proverbs 2 1st page - this one

turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding,

and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,

and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure….”

We’re memorizing Proverbs 2 and we’ve got a great line this

then you will understand the fear of the Lord and  you will find the knowledge of God.

The fear of the Lord – when we have the correct understanding and respect for his omnipotence.  His eternity.

The knowledge of God – transformed to the point where we love the things God loves and we hate the things God hates.

Yes, dear Father, we are searching for these things.

Sword Fighting Class – Search for It

My Child, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,Proverbs 2 1st page - this one

turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding,

and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding….”

God is helping us memorize Proverbs 2.  It’s all about wisdom and understanding – good stuff!  Here’s the next verse:

and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,”

If we knew for sure there was a pile of silver hidden in a certain place, how hard would we look?  How much time would we take?  How much effort?

If it was me and I had a pretty good idea of where to look and if I was guaranteed that the treasure would be there, I wouldn’t stop until I found it.

Here, God is guaranteeing us that there is very valuable treasure in his word to us.  We just need to read it and accept it and store it up inside of our hearts and minds.  We need to cry out for it and cry aloud for it…..and look for it.  Search for it.

It’s there.

We’re on this journey together – growing in our relationship with God.  As we grow in our ability to hear him.  As we grow in ability to soak up his truth and apply it to our lives.

Thank you for helping us grow, dear Father.

Sword Fighting Class – Turn Your Ear

“My Child, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding…

We are just starting the journey of memorizing Proverbs 2 together and I’m trying something new.  I’ve added an audio file below of me sharing what I’ve memorized so far.  It’s not perfect, but it’s close.  Hopefully we can encourage each other as develop this habit of writing God’s words upon our hearts and minds.  I also included James 1 if you’re still working on finalizing that.

Do you feel a ‘frizz’ of anticipation as we begin to store up within us these significant words from God about Proverbs 2 1st page - this onewisdom?

What is God going to reveal to us on this journey through Proverbs 2?

I am confident that we will have more wisdom when we’ve etched these words on our minds.  That’s what God is promising us – if we memorize his words, turning our ears and applying our hearts – we will find understanding and wisdom and knowledge and insight.

Amen, let it be so, dear Father.

Sword Fighting Class- We’re Not Done

We’re not done memorizing scriptures.  God has made this extremely clear to me as I have been praying about whether to continue the sword fighting classes or not.  The answer was a resounding ‘don’t stop’.  So then I started praying about what to memorize and had thought I was going to memorize a part of Isaiah that I love.  Proverbs 2 1st page - this oneBut God said, “Proverbs 2 – more about wisdom.”

So, we’re memorizing Proverbs 2 🙂  God promises he will help us.   I know of 6 people who are memorizing it with us so that will be awesome!  Proverbs 2 starts off with one God’s many commands to us to memorize scripture.  Here we go:

‘My child, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you..’

Yes, Abba Father.

Sword Fighting Class – It is Possible

Nothing is impossible with God.  We have memorized the whole first chapter of James and I know that would be totally impossible for me if God wasn’t helping.  I’m not good at memorizing things…..but scripture is different.  God makes it possible.James 1 1 - 9

So with hearts filled with gratitude to God for helping us carve these words right into our hearts and minds, we lift these words to you, dear Father:

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.  Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  If anyone lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives generously to all without fault, and it will be given to him.  But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea blown and tossed by the wind.  That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.James 1 part 2

The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position while the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, for he will pass away like the wild flower.  The sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the plant; the blossoms fall and its beauty is destroyed.  In the same way, a rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial because, when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me’ for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone.  But each one is tempted when, by his own evil desires, he is dragged away and enticed.  Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters, every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights who does not change like shifting shadows.  He chose to give us birth through the word of truth that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created.

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this; everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.  Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word that is planted in you, which can save you.

Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.  Anyone who listens to the word and does not do what it says is a like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that brings freedom and continues to do this, not forgetting what he heard, but doing it – that man will be blessed in what he does.

If anyone considers himself to be religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.  Religion that God the father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after the orphans and widows in their distress and to keep from being polluted by the world.

One of the ways we keep ourselves from being polluted by the world is memorizing scripture.  God’s truth sinks into our brain, changing our thoughts which changes our attitude which changes our actions.

Thanks you, dear Father.

We are doing soooooo well!  Thank you, dear Father, for helping us carve your words on our hearts and minds!  The next verse is very convicting:

“If anyone  considers himself religious and yet does not have a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

Boom!

Ouch!

Abba Father, we repent from those times when we have not held a tight rein on our tongues.  Open our eyes and stop us BEFORE we say the things we don’t want to say…..because we want to be a good reflection of you to those around us.  We would like for them to see your goodness and your grace and your love shining through us.  We understand….to do that, we need to hold tightly to our tongues.  Thank you for pointing this out to us in your word.  In the awesome name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
