Just Step in ?!

They’re finally there!  The Israelites are ready to claim the Promised Land.  They’ve been wandering and waiting for 40 years for this moment.  All that separates them from the land that God is giving them is the Jordan River.

Joshua tells the priests to carry the Ark of the Covenant to the bank of the river and just step in.  Step In?

The Bible also tells us that the Jordan river is at flood stage and is overflowing its banks.  It’s a powerful, roaring river.  And they were supposed to step in?

Couldn’t God just dry up a path first and then they could step in on dry land?

He could have but that’s not how he does these things.  Over and over in the Bible, he asked his people for a step of faith FIRST and then they experienced his miracles and blessings in their lives.  It’s the same with us.  He asks us to respond to him in obedience even when we have no idea how he’s going to work this out for our good.  After the obedience, we get to experience the ‘how much more’ he has for us.

Dear Father, please help our trust in you grow so that we can take the step of faiths you ask of us without worry and without doubt and without fear.

Yes! Stepping in is where we put our faith into action. Was just reading the account of the call of Gideon this morning.

Judges 6- And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!”

Gideon said to Him, “O my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.”

Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?”

God says, “Step out with what you have, in you strength, and I will add my supernatural touch to it and take you so much farther than you could ever go by yourself!” We step out and He does the rest, blocks everything coming from miles upstream, everything the enemy would send to sweep us off our feet. Instead, we get to walk on dry land! What a great God!

Here’s a quote that relates: “Don’t be afraid to take a large step if one is indicated. You can’t cross a chasm in two small jumps.” – David Lloyd George

This grabbed me because it is what I am living into this very week. Thank you for posting, Judy!

    1. Thanks for sharing, Carolyn! I think this is a challenge that we all have to face pretty regularly and it’s not easy, is it? Even though I’ve experienced God’s faithfulness over and over in my life, taking steps of faith always causes concern……and then growth 🙂
