Paid to Study the Bible

Every good thing on earth comes from God.
Several years ago this was highlighted to me when the company I work with invested a large amount of money in a manadatory character-building workshop for everyone. It included two entire days of discussions and sharing ideas of values and character issues.  A huge investment.

Every ‘truth’ they shared during this workshop was based on scripture. I know now that I shouldn’t have been surprised but I was slightly shocked back then.
Those of us in the crowd who were Christ-followers recognized it right away and really enjoyed being paid for 2 days of Bible study and application!  One of my peers who was also attending seminary actually found the scriptures that were the foundation of every ‘key point’ that was made.
I don’t work for a Christian company. I’m sure it wasn’t their intent to pay everyone to study the truths found in God’s word.
But it’s the only truth available.
Because all good things come from God.

Way Too Much

We’ve all been there – carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders.
It feels too heavy, it feels like it’s never-ending, it feels like it’s hopeless.

It feels like that because God didn’t create us to carry all of that weight on our own.
We’re supposed to give all of our burdens to him – our worries, our endless to-do lists, our fears. And then he gives back to us the things he wants us to do – our purpose for being here on earth.
The burden God gives us is not easier – God often asks us to do very difficult things that are not possible to do on our own.

It’s lighter because it’s designed just for us. He equips us and he enables us to carry out our purpose.

So, whenever we feel the weight of the world weighing us down, we know exactly what to do – don’t we?

The Wages of Wisdom

The wages of wisdom are more profitable than silver, better than gold.

So these wages are things like:

Making better choices – more good ones, less bad ones.

Setting the right priorities in my life – spending my time and energy on the most valuable things.

Hearing God’s voice daily as he guides me on my next step.

Being successful by God’s definition, not by the values of this crazy culture we live in.

Building a Godly legacy which will influence my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for generations to come.

Gotta love that list – definitely joyful!

The Demons Had No Doubts

Have you noticed that whenever Jesus meets up with demons in the Bible, they always know exactly who he is?  There are never any doubts in their minds – they call him the Son of God and they scream because they know his power.

They know all about him.

They don’t call him a prophet,

they don’t say he was a good teacher

or a good man.

They call him the Son of God.

Not a doubt.

Built on a Rock

There are times in all of our lives where the rain comes in torrents. We all have experienced the floodwaters rising…and rising…and rising.

It’s during these times that we discover  whether our feet are planted on the Solid Rock or are we feeling washed away by all of the waves of problems tugging at us from all directions?

As parents, we want our children to have a solid foundation to grow on and keep them safe. The only way they are going to have that is if we have it. And we don’t get a solid foundation from money or careers or possessions – we get it from our relationship with God. When our happiness and confidence are built on him, we can stand firm when the storms hit.

And there’s always a storm brewing out there so there is no better time than now to build that firm foundation.

Keep on Asking,Keep On Seeking, Keep on Knocking

That’s what we’re doing this year as we read God’s Word.
We’re asking –
to know God
to hear God
to grow in wisdom.
We’re seeking –
to understand
to hear his voice as he guides us
to grow in loving the things he loves.

And we’re knocking.
Everytime we open the pages of his word, we are knocking – we’re making ourselves available for God to speak to us, to transform us, to bring us joy.

What does God promise us in return? We will receive, we will find and doors will be opened. Amen, Hallelujah!

Eating the Bitter Fruit

Oh, yes, I’ve been there. I have eaten the bitter fruit of living life my own way. I have made some bad decisions in my life and paying the consequences for those has been both painful and embarrassing at times. I am still paying consequences for foolish things I chose to do when I was making decisions on my own without caring about what God said was right or wrong.

The fruit of those bad decisions may be bitter but we don’t want to become bitter as a result. God lets us pay the consequences so that we learn, we remember, we don’t do those things again. He doesn’t do this to punish us, he does it to help grow us into the people he planned for us to be.

The sweet outweighs the bitter as we grow closer in our walk with him.

Walking Closely with God

Noah walked closely with God.
God could talk with Noah because he knew he was listening.
God could guide Noah in a plan to save his family because he knew Noah would obey.
God could give Noah something to do that would change the world because he knew Noah would trust him and take a step of faith even when it was something that Noah knew nothing about.
I have found it very interesting to read in the Bible how many of the great people of faith are described as walking closely with God.
In Genesis 5 we’ll be reading about Enoch who walked closely with God. And he disappeared…God took him up to heaven.
What would it feel like to walk so closely with God that he would just take you up?

January 1

In Genesis 1:6, God separates the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth. He called this space ‘sky’.
What was the shape of the earth if there was no sky? How could the waters of the earth be attached to the waters of the heavens?
Questions like these used to make me have doubts about God. When I couldn’t understand something, I would think it wasn’t true.
Now I realize that the fact that I don’t understand everything in the Bible actually adds to God’s credibility as the Master of Universe. I only have a 3 1/2 pound brain – why should I be able to understand everything about God when his intelligence is limitless?

Let’s do this together!

2012 is going to be a great year!

And to make it even better, we’re going on a journey through the Bible together.

I’m using the One Year Bible, NLT version.

It makes it easier by putting in all in order.  For those of you who want to use your own Bible, I’ll post the readings for each month so you’ll have them.

Please make any comments here that you’d like as we take this journey together.  God tells us that, whenever we seek him, we find him.  As we seek him by committing to read his word, I am confident that we’re going to find him  in new ways this year.

Remember – how do we eat an elephant?  One bite at a time.  Here we go!
